Best of Show Winners in Creative Arts Department at Arkansas State Fair

Fulton County fair exhibitors won six Best of Show awards in the Creative Arts Department at the Arkansas State Fair held October 10-19, 2008 in Little Rock. Exhibits at the state fair are placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the open divisions and 1st through 10th place in the junior and youth divisions. Exhibits are not judged on their own merit as they are on the county and district level.

Congratulations to the three adult and three junior and youth exhibitors who won Best of Show awards. They were: Beverly Reeves (Knitting), Paula Hicks (Art) and Kathy Portwood (Ceramics). Junior and Youth Best of Show winners were: Logan Russell and Tia Baldridge (Art) and Amber Taylor (Handicrafts). Beverly Reeves also received the Overall Knitting Award for the state fair.

Fulton County had 63 exhibitors entering items in the Creative Arts Department at the state fair.

Fulton County Fair Honors 2007 Volunteers
The Fulton County Fair Board of Directors honored the 143 volunteers who donated time to the Fulton County Fair in 2007 with a dinner on November 5 at the Hickinbotham-Miller Building.
MaLinda Coffman and Shirley Black presented special awards for the family living department to High Point Award Winners - Thomas Collins for the youth and junior exhibitors and Gail Plumlee for the adult division. Emma Phillips received the Horticulture Award for having the most entries for her 4-H gardening project. The Bright Future 4-H Club was named the High Point Junior Club and the Heart Extension Homemakers won the High Point Open Club award.
Rob Long and Heath Shrable gave out the Livestock Herdsman awards. Winners were: Dairy – Austin Perkey, Beef – Carson York, Sheep – Emily Perryman; Goats - Wendi Martin; Swine – Corby May; Rabbits - Perri Huett; and Poultry - Thelessa Wright.
Fair Manager Carolyn Lewis presented the Arnold Cheek Award to Imogene Crawford for her grandson Drew Crawford who could not attend because of school. She also recognized Drew for his many years of exhibiting in the Fulton County Fair Junior Livestock Show and told those attending that he would be missed next year when he moves to the adult division.
Three junior exhibitors were named as Fulton County Fair Junior Ambassadors in recognition for their work with the Fulton County Fair. The new Junior Ambassadors are Katie Moore, Amber Taylor and Carson York.

Katie Moore was also named a Fulton County Fair Junior Ambassador. Amber Taylor was named a Fulton County Fair Junior Ambassador. She could not be present because of a school activity. Vicky Taylor accepts her certificate and shirt.

The awards program ended with Fair Board President Michael Barnett recognizing three former board members for their many years of service to the Fulton County Fair. Jackie Clayton, Ron Plumlee and Jim Walling each received a plaque for their service and a new sign for the fairgrounds arena was unveiled naming the arena the Clayton-Plumlee-Walling Arena.

Fulton County wins in the Creative Arts Department at State Fair

Fulton County fair exhibitors won seven Best of Show awards in the Creative Arts Department at the Arkansas State Fair held October 12-21 in Little Rock. Exhibits at the state fair are placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the open divisions and 1st through 10th place in the junior and youth divisions. Exhibits are not judged on their own merit as they are on the county and district level.

Congratulations to the four adult and three junior and youth exhibitors who won Best of Show awards. They were: Marilyn Hines (Swedish Weaving Afghan), Judith Metz (Quilt), Larry Goza (Creative Writing), and Diane Sushinksky (Food Preservation-Blackberries). Junior and Youth Best of Show winners were: Lane Hall (Art); McKenzie Martin (Apiary- Honey), and Timothy Robinson (Photography).

Other winners were: Youth Crafts - Malinda Roberts - 2nd place; Donald Roberts - 2nd Place; Caleb Huett - 4th place; D. J. Shewbuirt - 4th Place; Timothy Robinson - 1st place; and Dakota Gray Reynolds - 9th Place. Winners in the Junior Crafts Department were: Thomas Guerber - 3rd place. Open Craft winners were: Karen Smith-Embellished Shirt - 2nd place and Centerpiece - 2nd place.

Youth Photography winners were: Kailee Abney - 2nd place and Ally Lewis - 7th place. Junior Photography winners were: Makollie Koelling - 2nd place and Katie Moore - 2nd place. Winners in Open Photography were: Monica Perryman - 1st place; Karen Langethorn - 2nd place; and Carolyn Lewis - 3rd place.

In the Junior Needlework department Jessie Fregia won 1st place on her quilt and Elizabeth Anderson placed 6th on her apron.. Open Needlework winners were: Sharon Waltman - 1st place on her pillows and 1st on her quilted wall hanging; Beverly Reeves won 2nd on her knitted shawl and 3rd place on a knitted sweater; Wanda Nelson placed 2nd on her quilt and 2nd on her quilted wall hanging. Opal Willis was a 3rd place winner on her doily and Marilyn Hines placed 3rd on a quilted wall hanging.

Youth Art winners were Courtney Burk - 3rd place, Tristen Palumbo - 4th place, and Burgin Shelby - 6th place. Junior Art winners were Rachel Palumbo - 4th place and Stacy Yarnell - 9th place.. Open Art winners were: Luanne Stone - 1st place, Glenda Plumlee - 1st place, Dixie Wilson - 1st place and Barbara Smock - 3rd place. Sarah Parnell was the 5th place winner in creative writing.

In the Food Preservation department Grace Phillips placed 3rd. In the Junior Food Preservation department Thomas Collins placed 1st in jams and jellies, Katie Moore placed 4th in vegetables and Thomas Collins placed 6th in pickles and relishes. Open Food Preservation winners were: Sarah Huett - 1st in jams and jellies.

Others exhibiting in the creative arts department at the state fair were: Margie Foster, Imogene Crawford, Phyllis Robbins, Shirley Black, Carol Durham, Barbara Passman, Jay Black, Diana Wilson, Noble Lewis, Mary Lewis, Carla Quataert, Janie Hutson, Gail Plumlee, and Cameron Lewis.


Fulton County Fair Awarded Grant

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe presented the Fulton County Fair Association with a $4,000 grant to build restrooms for the livestock barns. The grant was awarded through the County Fair Building Grant Program at an awards ceremony in the Governor’s Conference Room at the State Capitol on October 24th.

The Arkansas Department of Rural Services works in partnership with the Arkansas Rural Development Commission to administer the County Fair Grant Program each year. Counties with a population of 55,000 or less are eligible to apply.
